EYEGAUGE FIELD NOTES / 02
Area doesn’t grow
like length.
Halve a circle’s radius and you get a quarter of its area. That mismatch makes the second round interesting.
Why a square root?
A circle’s area is π times its radius squared. Divide the small circle’s area by the large circle’s area: π cancels, leaving the radius ratio squared.
Area fraction = (small radius / large radius)²
Radius ratio = √(target percent / 100)
For 62% of the area, the radius ratio is √0.62, approximately 78.74%. The slider changes the area percentage; the drawing uses its square root to set the radius. “Your guess” in the results always refers to area, not radius.
Rectangles and lines
The rectangle keeps a fixed height. Filling 37% of its width therefore fills 37% of its area. In the line round, a 43% guess draws 43% of the full end-to-end length. Line thickness does not count.
Errors in percentage points
If the target is 37% and your guess is 42%, the error is 5 percentage points, abbreviated pp. This differs from the relative error of about 13.5%. EyeGauge uses percentage-point differences to keep every round on the same 0–100 scale.
Round error = |guess − target|
Final score = 100 − mean of three errors
Errors of 5, 8, and 2 pp average to 5 pp, giving a score of 95.0. Percentages and scores display one decimal place. There are no time bonuses, shape weights, or adjustments based on other players.
What does a high score mean?
It means these three guesses were close to these three targets. It is not an intelligence, eyesight, or design-ability test, and it does not represent a population percentile. Replaying a course may help you remember the targets, so local bests explicitly include replays.
Recreating a course
Daily courses use a UTC date and course version 1. Practice courses use an eight-character code and version 1. A fixed algorithm creates three integer targets between 15% and 85%. The same input always produces the same targets.
This is not certified randomness, and the target values can be inspected in browser code. EyeGauge is designed for casual play between people who trust each other.
